It was love at first sight! So much so that I wrote an article predicting that Overwatch would be the benchmark for first-person shooter (FPS) games before 2018. This was back when Bastion had a shield, you could play the same character six times, and Reinhardt’s ult was powerful enough for him to easily do 1 vs 4. Article : « OVERWATCH: : The game the competitive FPS scene needed »

However, it was at the beginning of Season 1 (July 2016) of the competitive mode that I began to gradually drop the game. Not because I was no longer interested in it, but rather because the work schedules of the people I was playing with, as well as my own, had drastically changed. Having a new circle of gamers to play with, I finally switched to Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege (R6). Lately, it’s Apex Legends, that I play the most with my brother. Overwatch is a game that I really enjoy, when I can play it with people I know, as you can see with this example of one of my Facebook live streams done in a friendly tournament at Meltdown Montreal.

In short, I still consider the game to be “fun” to play, even though it seems like fewer and fewer people around me are playing it. Is it the benchmark for FPS in 2019? More or less, because it really depends on who you talk to. For anyone who even slightly follows the international eSports scene, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) remains ubiquitous. The fact that it’s been free since December 2018 and that there are still large prize pools in professional tournaments definitely helps the game maintain a presence in the global scene. R6 is constantly growing, but it still has a long way to go to reach the top.

Remember the nuance I made at the beginning of the previous paragraph: “it depends a lot on who you’re talking to”? Indeed, the more popular and well-known esports become among the general population, the more the answer will be geared towards what’s getting the most buzz, which is most likely Fortnite. For a technical reason, because it’s a third-person shooter and not a first-person shooter, and for a competitive reason, because there isn’t really an established esports scene (yes, we can debate this for a long time), I’ll exclude the game. What would be the second game that comes to mind for the person who doesn’t play or doesn’t follow esports at all? Overwatch is a candidate you’re likely to hear about..

Why Overwatch? First, because of the regionalized franchises. When an investor buys a franchise for over $30 million, it gets people talking. When an investor buys a franchise for over $30 million from a particular city, the whole region is talking about it. Second, Overwatch is one of the games often featured in student leagues because, even though there is “violence,” it’s fanciful in the same way as Looney Tunes. Unlike CS:GO, or even worse, R6, where terrorists and counter-terrorists face off in bloody skirmishes. So, especially with all the noise and attention that school leagues and programs are getting lately, and not just in Quebec, Overwatch has greater visibility among the general population.

Taking Quebec as an example, Overwatch has additional visibility thanks to the Ligue Cyber Espoirs, the Montreal Esports Academy day camp, the professional teamMontreal Rebellion, the all-female Team Sailor Scout, and more.

Is Overwatch the benchmark for FPS games? It’s debatable, and honestly, in the end, it doesn’t matter. What’s most important is that the game contributes to the promotion and democratization of esports.

I just reinstalled it, so if anyone wants to play soon, let me know!

Also, log in before June 11th to get a free loot box!
