Montreal Comiccon 2017 is now over and it is with a good night’s sleep that I finally write my impressions, but first, let’s quickly talk about the esports area.

I was, like many people, disappointed when I learned that the esports area was going to be postponed, especially since it was one of the main reasons I was going and I was supposed to give a talk there, which was also canceled in the process. I won’t go into details, but basically, it’s simply a business decision on Comiccon’s part. The door is not closed and it’s still possible that esports will come back in the next few years, but I have very serious doubts that this will happen in the near future. Comiccon is a pop culture festival where every activity sells tickets (famous actors, geek shops, premieres (like the next Call of Duty, cosplays, etc.). Unless it’s hosting a major tournament, like Fan Expo in Toronto, and especially given the current state of the market in Quebec, esports alone won’t sell a lot of tickets in a context like Montreal Comiccon.
Friday:
Friday was one of the busiest days because that was the main day I visited most of the people I needed to see for professional reasons. After going to the Nerdstock show and then to Meltdown Montreal to make sure everything was still 100% perfect for the party the next day, I realized something.
1 388 / 5 000
I realized it was going to be a long weekend and that this edition would be a success when I got home at 4:15 a.m. with the birds flying, having just finished the first day.
Saturday:
My first thought when I arrived on site on Saturday, and saw the incredible number of people, was that I should have done the opposite: enjoy the convention on Friday and do my professional tour on Saturday! All in all, it was very entertaining and I met lots of great new people.
Highlights:
– The Twitch Streams 101 seminar with Scarlet Cosplay was super interesting
– Holobonies by q-bit games is super fun to play with a group, even though I’m really bad at it.
– The cosplay masquerade was worth the wait until 8:30 p.m..
– The official Comiccon afterparty I organized at Meltdown Montreal was a huge success!
Sunday:
The most notable thing about Sunday was that I forgot to try the new Call of Duty!!!! I was so excited to try it! This, and the fact that they really need to improve the ventilation in the Jam Nation room…
In conclusion, good job to everyone who participated in any way in organizing Comiccon or any of its parts. Special mention to the entire Multiplayer team; you really took the indie zone up a notch this year.
