Taking into account both the scale of the phenomenon of play, the benefits of play for well-being, and its risks in the context of techno-economic developments, the overall objective of this Chair is to study play through its technological manifestations and its effects on players’ practices. The Chair’s program lies at the intersection of the social sciences (communication, game studies, and surveillance studies) and data science and artificial intelligence. Its originality lies in treating gaming and computer technologies both as subjects of study and as methodological tools. The social objectives are (1) to identify the benefits of video games and technological developments while highlighting their risks to society, (2) to make the video game environment healthier and safer, and (3) to promote the awareness-raising power of games and their potential for social innovation.
